Find peace in bobo-central at Ulrich

The several steps down to the entrance combined with the silence eluding from St. Ulrich Church in the middle of the cobblestone square put us into a relaxed vacation mood before even entering. We sat down on the stylish, grey leather benches that were even more comfortable than anticipated. A sheer, carefree atmosphere hung in the air, which was underlined by the mellow décor, friendly looking waiters and soothing voice of Al Green. It was one of those perfect, work-free weekday mornings when the only decision to be made is whether to have a late morning snack or an early lunch.

The unusual breakfast offer eased our decision and we settled for the breakfast sandwich, which is the Viennese answer to the infamous New York bagel. Between two heavenly, dark slices of locally baked bread (the infamous Joseph Brot the whole town’s raving about) we found an herbal omelette, crispy bacon, baby leaf spinach and melted gouda cheese. It came with homemade tomato chutney and we couldn’t resist washing it al down with the pear-banana-granola smoothie.

The second choice – the Tabula Rasa, was more traditional. A selection of fine ham and cheese with a neatly served portion of muesli and berries in an expropriated jam glass.

Glancing at the menu again we noticed that Ulrich also has quite and unusual lunch and dinner offer – Euro-Asian Fusion with health food highlights. Almost compulsively we ordered the antipasti plate, which also comes as one refreshingly new combination. On it we find crispy crust pumpkin and fried octopus among other scrumptious delicacies. It began to get more crowded – lunchtime business – and it is going well.

The waiters remained friendly, the sunlight danced playfully on the industrial style metal pipes that run underneath the ceiling and the feeling of ultimate relaxation lingered – so did we and enjoyed a frothy melange from the traditional Alt Wien Kaffee roast.

The Verdict:

Tucked into a quiet courtyard, Ulrich plays it cool. The eclectic menu can take getting used to but if your out for good service and breakfast within your comfort zone, you’ve come to the right place.
