Coming together to experience a night together at the Kazerne

Close to the center of the city this ginormous location the Kazerne – a former military police barracks and the adjoining warehouse was redesigned to give the creative industries a place to showcase art & design in combination with good food and drinks. The very stark design of the interior puts exhibitions in the right light with minimal intrusions into the artwork. White illuminated glasses cubes were placed throughout the whole area and were the podiums for the art pieces.

From the bar in the front to the open kitchen in the back everything has its place. You can see right away that a lot of thought and consideration went into creating this place. The atmosphere is friendly and invites each guest to explore the state-of-the-art presentations. All lot of creatives meet and greet on a regular basis but for Annemoon Geurts and Koen Rijnbeek the founders of the Kazerne their venue is a place for everyone interested in art, food and good company.

The food:

I had the burrata (I love a good burrata) with roasted tomatoes and the beef cheeks with “forgotten vegetables” like salsify, turnip greens and chicory in a burnt celeriac creme. Also delectable were the risotto and of course the oysters. Everything was prepared with an eye for detail, presentation and a love for food. The only thing missing was a bit of salt. A friend of mine told me (don’t know if it is actually true so don’t sue me) Dutch food usually has very little salt to it almost everywhere.

The creative director Annemoon has a lot of wonderful ideas and projects set up for the future including further collaborations with the Dutch Design Week and a plan to open a hotel next door where you can sleep in between all the art pieces. I am intrigued and am looking forward to another visit.
